Politicians & the Chapter II of the Nigeria Constitution

Adams Oshiomhole, outgone governor of Edo State has been tagged by many as one of the most popular politicians of the country. One of his best practices that most leaders lack is the sense of humility. He commissioned many projects especially Edo Central Hospital. edo-hospital-e1458006386696Many people even the president lauded this infrastructure.

In a country bedridden by many kleptocrats, a project like this draws important state attention. There are numerous related articles in Nigeria; in July 2014, a former governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan commissioned a swimming pool in Warri City stadium. State celebration is unnecessary if government builds a hospital because it is their right and it is in our constitution.

These are excerpts of Chapter II of the Nigerian constitution.

Section 17.3 The State shall direct its policy towards ensuring that -

(a) all citizens, without discrimination on any group whatsoever, have the opportunity for securing adequate means of livelihood as well as adequate opportunity to secure suitable employment
(b) conditions of work are just and humane, and that there are adequate facilities for leisure and for social, religious and cultural life;
(c) the health, safety and welfare of all persons in employment are safeguarded and not endangered or abused;
(d) there are adequate medical and health facilities for all persons.

See the Chapter II of the Nigeria Constitution here. It is imperative that a body of fundamental principles of a sovereign society is obeyed with discipline.
